Our Founding Story
Navan (formerly TripActions) was founded in 2015 by Ariel Cohen and Ilan Twig, two seasoned entrepreneurs with deep experience in travel technology and enterprise software. Frustrated by the fragmented, outdated tools used by businesses to manage travel and expenses, they set out to build a unified, user-centric platform that combined consumer-grade simplicity with enterprise-grade control.
From a small office in Palo Alto, California, the team launched the first version of the platform in 2017. It was an instant hit—combining a sleek booking interface with real-time policy enforcement, automated expense reporting, and seamless integrations with accounting systems like NetSuite and QuickBooks.
By 2019, Navan had raised over $250 million in venture funding and expanded to London and Sydney, serving global clients like Twilio, Box, and GoDaddy. The company’s mission remained clear: eliminate the friction in business travel and spend management through intelligent automation and delightful design.
Why "Navan"?
In 2023, the company rebranded from TripActions to Navan—a name inspired by "navigation" and "avenue," symbolizing a new path forward in corporate spend management. The rebrand reflected the company’s evolution beyond travel into a full-stack financial operations platform, including Navan Payments, AI-powered analytics, and sustainability tracking.
Stages of Growth & Innovation
Navan’s journey from a startup to a global leader in corporate spend management has been marked by strategic milestones, technological breakthroughs, and customer-centric innovation.
Phase 1: Foundation (2015–2017)
The company built its core platform with a focus on user experience. Unlike legacy tools that prioritized admin control over traveler convenience, Navan empowered employees to book compliant travel in seconds—while giving finance teams real-time visibility.
Phase 2: Scale & Global Expansion (2018–2020)
Navan secured major funding rounds ($154M Series D in 2019) and opened offices in London, Tel Aviv, and Sydney. The platform added multi-currency support, duty-of-care features, and integrations with over 50 HR and finance systems.
Phase 3: Product Diversification (2021–2023)
Acquisition of Reed & Mackay (luxury travel) and Commtrac (expense automation) expanded Navan’s capabilities. The launch of Navan Payments introduced virtual and physical corporate cards with embedded spend controls.
Phase 4: AI & Sustainability (2024–Present)
Navan now leverages generative AI to predict travel disruptions, optimize itineraries, and automate expense audits. Its Carbon Dashboard helps companies track and reduce emissions across all business travel.
